Many legal employers place a great deal of emphasis on the U.S. News & World Report annual law school rankings when deciding where to focus their recruitment efforts. However, have you ever stopped and wondered about the basis for those rankings? Who decides the “reputation” of law schools, which accounts for 40% of the rankings? How are the rankings complied, and who decided the criteria used? The discussion will explain the methodology behind the rankings, address limitations and discrepancies inherent in the magazine’s survey methodologies, as well as important factors relevant to employers that are not reflected in the ranking system. The topic will be a Professional Development Resource Panel, which will feature representatives from three distinguished consulting firms, Greiner Consulting (Erika Schreiber), Lawyers Life Coach (Naomi Beard) and Shannon & Manch (Amy Berenson Mallow), discussing a variety of topics including professional development, career counseling, life and career coaching and career transition. All three firms provide these services to attorneys, but can also provide coaching and other services to LAALRA members (for a fee of course), so this is an opportunity to gather information on a variety of levels.
