Many legal employers place a great deal of emphasis on the U.S. News & World Report annual law school rankings when deciding where to focus their recruitment efforts. However, have you ever stopped and wondered about the basis for those rankings? Who decides the “reputation” of law schools, which accounts for 40% of the rankings? How are the rankings complied, and who decided the criteria used? The discussion will explain the methodology behind the rankings, address limitations and discrepancies inherent in the magazine’s survey methodologies, as well as important factors relevant to employers that are not reflected in the ranking system.
